Refrain from the Drain
The recent oil pollution of the Abberd Brook highlighted the fact that many external domestic and public drains run not into some magical cleaning centre but directly into our waterways. And it’s not just oil that represents a danger to life in and around our brooks and rivers.
Try
reading the warnings on the back of common household containers about the
impact of the contents on aquatic life!
So please think twice and then think
again before pouring waste down the drain . With the exception of petrol and diesel,
Calne’s excellent waste and recycling centre will take all forms of waste chemicals and associated waste. So please,
Refrain from the Drain.
Reporting water pollution
If you notice any of the following in or near a stream or
river:
• Sewage
solids
• Toilet
debris such as toilet paper, condoms and sanitary products
• Soap-suds
or a milky-looking discharge
• Grey
coloured water
• Noticeable
sewage smells
It could be caused by an overflowing or blocked drain
leading to water pollution.
Call Wessex Water immediately on 0345 600 4 600 with a location and a description of the issue.
Wessex Water aim to attend the site within two hours. They will deal with it if they find it to be their responsibility, either way, the issue will be reported to the Environment Agency.
Volunteering
We could use your help!
Volunteer with River Warriors to keep Abberd Brook clean, or with Calne Clean Up Crew to litter pick and prevent rubbish reaching our watercourses.
Check back for more updates and advice on keeping our river and its tributaries clean!
